Part1. Verbs of motion with the prefix “по-“, tenses
and aspects

The prefix по- can be added to all verbs of motion. The resulting verbs are perfective in aspect and thus can only be used in the Past and Future Tenses.

Past Tense

  • — Где Иван?
  • — Он пошёл
    в университет
  • “Where is Ivan?”
  • “He left for university.”
  • Папа час назад
    поехал на работу.
  • Dad left for work an hour ago.
  • Друзья вечером
    пошли в бар пить
    пиво.
  • In the evening the friends
  • headed to a bar for some beer.

Future Tense

  • Я пойду вечером
    в театр с сестрой.
  • Tonight I’m going to the
    theatre with my sister.
  • Мы поедем на море
    летом.
  • We are going to the seaside
    in summer.
  • Завтра он полетит
    домой.
  • Tomorrow he is flying home.

Past Tense

  • Он походил
    по комнате пять
    минут и сел
    на диван.
  • He walked around the room for
    a few minutes and sat down on
    the sofa.
  • Мы полетали
    немного
    и приземлились.
  • We flew for a short while
    and landed.
  • Он поездил
    по этому городу
    и понял, что теперь
    неплохо знает
    местность.
  • He took a short drive around
    the city and realized that now
    he knows the place quite well.

Future Tense

  • Я недолго похожу
    по магазинам
    и вернусь.
  • I’ll go shopping for a while
    and come back.
  • - Мы с папой
    немного поездим
    на новой машине,
    хорошо, мама?
  • Mum, can dad and I go for a
    short drive in the new car?
  • Кто хочет полетать

Part2. “по-” + + verbs from the “идти” group - meanings

Verbs from the идти group with the prefix по- can have the following meanings:

  1. Absolute beginning of motion, direction or purpose not specified (the motion comes after a static condition).
  2. Beginning of a new stage of motion (there has already been some motion before).
  3. Action as intention, desire or a supposition—in the Future Tense.

Part3. “по-“ + verbs from the “ходить” group - meanings

Verbs from the ходить group with the prefix по- can have the following meanings:

  1. The action lasted a short while.
  2. The action is not very significant.

Meaning

Remember

Verbs of motion with prefixes have one peculiarity: the Present Tense usually requires a verb from the “ходить” group, as they show that the action is taking place right now. Verbs from the “идти” group are used in the Past Tense in the meaning of a completed action or in the Future Tense in the meaning of potential result.

Ты говоришь, что много видел. А уж я-то поездил по миру
больше, чем ты.

Are you saying you’ve seen a lot? I have traveled around the world more than you.

Этот капитан поплавал по всем морям и океанам. Он старый
морской волк.

The captain has sailed all the oceans and seas. He is an old sea dog.
